People Say the Most Awkward Things!

“People say the most awkward things!”

*You just have one?!

*Now that you gave a child a home, God will bless you with one of your own

*What kind of issues did either you or your husband have?

*Does your son call you mom?

*How were you able to afford adoption?

*Your so blessed because you didn’t have to go through labor pains!

*Your son is alone, he should have a sibling

*There is no need to tell your boy that he is adopted since he looks so much like you and your husband

I realize that adoption is so foreign to so many, however, I will stand up for my son and adoption itself when necessary. There are so many more statements, questions, unsolicited advice potential and even adoptive parents receive throughout their journey.

If you ever meet and or learn of a couple who is going through the adoption “process” or has adopted, take a step back and reserve yourself from making statements that may make them feel uncomfortable or even questioning their motives or adoption plans.

Encourage them, pray for them and pray with them!! Lastly, offer your heart, ears and shoulder to cry on if they are ever in need of someone to talk to.

Adoption is colorful and beautiful, however, what takes place behind closed doors no one really has any insight to and as a community we need to be more mindful to those who are going through the season of fear, hope, pain, happiness and even heartbreak.
